International Migratory Bird Day, May 12 The Viles Arboretum invites all to join in a fun and educational program of walks, workshops, educational activities and live bird demonstrations.
International Migratory Bird Day is a worldwide celebration of birds and it is aimed at increasing awareness about the fascinating phenomenon of migration and the many conservation needs of our feathered friends.
All of this made possible by the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, Augusta Bird Club, Home Depot, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and all activity leaders.
There is no entrance fee. There is a fee for lunch and as always, we encourage participants to consider becoming a member of the Arboretum and support our conservation and education mission.
May 12 - Saturday
7:30 – 10:30 Bird walks led by Augusta Bird Club
9:00 – 10:30 Bird banding with Dr. Herb Wilson from Colby College
9:00 - 3:00 The Arboretum Store with feeders, bird houses, Sky Flight mobiles, etc.
9:00 -10:00 Kids bird walk with Michael Smith
10:00 -11:00 Kids activities (Bird house construction with Home Depot (take home a free bird house!, crafts, art, etc in the classroom with various people)
11:00 -12:00 Birds of Prey with Chewonki – This is a live bird presentation
12:00 -1:00 Lunch – Chicken barbeque will be served. RSVP by May 10 required. Children’s meals will also be available. $15/$5. Hamburger meals will be available for $8.
1:00 – 2:00 Radio telemetry demonstration and "treasure hunt" with Henning Stabins, Plum Creek Biologist
