Maine Audubon Birdathon Starts This Week

Maine Audubon's annual Birdathon fund-raiser--where teams support wildife conservation by collecting pledges and identifying as many bird species as they can--kicks off this week with a birder's swap meet at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth on Thursday evening and a free birder's breakfast at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday from 7-9 a.m.

Under new state rules, fishing a longer season with fewer traps per person, Monhegan lobstermen are having surprising success catching as many or more lobsters as before. “We are now fishing 300 traps apiece,” said Doug Boynton, who has been fishing off Monhegan for 38 years. “And the fishing is as good as when we were fishing 600 traps.” |
