Opinion: Demise of Maine’s Deer Damages Our Economy George Smith Maine Nature Blog - Tuesday, December 08, 2009 The deer hunting season was a disappointment for hunters and a disaster for the outdoor industry. Deer have disappeared from the North Woods and their numbers in central Maine are greatly diminished. The implication is severe for sporting camps, guides, butchers, taxidermists, motels, gas stations, and all others who benefit from the spending of deer hunters. Former IF&W Commissioner Bucky Owen may be right that “deer hunting in the North Woods is all over.” |
Opinion: Hard lessons from the Fox Islands Wind Project Working Waterfront - Tuesday, December 08, 2009 As neighbors of the wind turbines, we find ourselves in the midst of an unexpected, unwanted life crisis. When GE flipped the switch and the turbines began to turn, island life as we knew it evaporated. Before any other island community takes the step towards wind power, come to Vinalhaven and see for yourselves the consequences of those actions. |
Burn a Tree to Save the Planet? The Crazy Logic Behind Biomass Other - Tuesday, December 08, 2009 It might seem crazy that anyone would even consider the incineration of wood and its byproducts to be a green substitute for toxic fuels such as coal. This bill needs to be thrown out and go back to the hunter safety course. Bring back common sense. |
Editorial: Take action, or dawdle? Times Record - Tuesday, December 08, 2009 If global warming is a hoax, not worthy of concern, why then are people around the world worried about noticeable changes in weather patterns, average temperatures, viability of staple food crops and flooding of the world’s major coastal cities? If a hoax, why would the Pentagon, during the Bush presidency, warn of threats to our nation’s security and economy if global warming was not addressed? |
